OVERVIEW
We’re Counting on Us (WCOU) [“wuh-ko-oo”] is a conceptual art piece celebrating numbers, language, diversity and long term thinking. It is similar to I’m Counting on You (ICOY) in that it builds an audio stream of spoken numerals in diverse human languages, and the stream represents the digits of an irrational decimal number. However, while ICOY streams audio as individual experiences, each starting with the first digit of the irrational number, WCOU will start once and only once, and will attempt to stream millions of spoken numerals, uninterrupted, over the course of many years. It will be implemented as an Internet radio station. People will be able to experience the stream by jumping in at any point, and all listeners will hear the same numerals at roughly the same time. WCOU shares the spirit of other experiments in long term thinking, as undertaken by The Long Now Foundation. Rather than an algorithmic recitation of a million digits of π, as in the case of ICOY, WCOU will broadcast many millions of digits of π over decades.
